Huawei Honor 6X User Review, is it worth buying ?

Huawei Honor 6X has been out for a while now. It is one of the first under 15K smartphones to ship with Dual Cameras. It has a 12MP main camera and a 2MP sensor along with to capture depth information. Huawei uses this setup to create Bokeh effect in their camera app. Honor 6X is now available for a Deal price of just Rs 11,999 ( 3GB ram 32GB )Rs 13,999 ( 4GB ram, 64GB ). Is it worth buying for this price ?

I have been using this phone for a few weeks now as my daily driver. Before Honor 6X, i have used Google Nexus 5X for almost an year.

Here is a list of things i liked about this phone.

  1. Good Battery Life : 6X ships with a 3340mAh battery. You can get around 5 hours of screen on time with this i.e. a Full day usage easily. Huawei has also baked in Power Saving Mode and Ultra Power Saving modes to further extend the battery life.
  2. Performance : This is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 655 Octacore processor and Mali-T830MP2 GPU. Overall performance is quite good. I hardly saw any lags during regular multi tasking between apps. I haven’t tested extreme high end gaming with this, most games should run without any issues thanks to the 4GB ram on board. ( there is a 3GB ram variant as well ).
  3. Operating System : I am switching from Google Nexus 5X which was running on the latest Android 7.1.1. I absolutely loved Stock Android. On Honor 6X, i got it with Android 6 Marshmallow based EMUI. In June 2017, i got an OTA update to Android 7.0 based EMUI 5 with June Security patches applied. Even though the User interface is not as fluid and fast as a Nexus 5X, i really liked the colorful UI and the ability to apply themes and all. If you are like me, who doesn’t like the iPhone like no app drawer launcher, install Google Now launcher or Nova Launcher from Playstore.
  4. Overall Build Quality : The device looks premium overall with metallic build.
  5. Fingerprint Sensor : This is FAST. You also setup this to take selfies, swipe between photos in the Gallery and to pull down the app drawer.
  6. Good Network Coverage and WiFi Access.

Now here are a few things i Dislike about Honor 6X

  1. Camera : Many would be buying this phone for it’s camera. It has a Sony sensor on board which is the same model as the one seen in Xiaomi Mi 6. However, the physical aperture of the lens is F2.2 which is lower than the current standard F2.0 seen on many phones. Huawei claims in their ads F/0.95 – F/16 aperture which is in not true and this effect is done via software. So how good is Honor 6X’s camera ? I would say average. It takes good photos during day light, but once the light drops, due to the F2.2 aperture, the ISO shoots up resulting in grainy images with less detail. This is to be expected from a mobile camera sensor. Even in good lighting, sometimes i am not satisfied with the results. To get better results, i have now started shooting RAW with manual controls using Adobe Lightroom Mobile camera as the default Camera app on the Honor 6X doesn’t allow RAW shooting.
  2. The Display : Don’t get me wrong – Honor 6X has a good display and very much usable under Sunlight. However, the screen doesn’t come with Gorilla Glass protection which is a shame. Huawei ships this with a screen protector already applied – leave it on is my advice.
  3. Slippery : This has a metallic back and there is hardly any grip. Since this is a 5.5 inch phone, it makes things more difficult. If you are switching from a 5 inch device, it is gonna take a while for you to adjust to this bigger slippery surface.
  4. No Fast Charging
  5. Is this gonna get Android O or EMUI 5.1 update ? NO.

Comparing to my old Google Nexus 5X

Honor 6X’s performance is much faster and better than Nexus 5X. It also has far better battery backup than Nexus. However, when it comes to camera performance, LG Nexus 5X’s Google Camera software is far superior than Huawei’s software seen in 6X. Also thanks to a faster F2.0 aperture, Laser Auto Focus and Google’s incredible HDR+ algorithm, Nexus 5X produces detailed, noise free images in most scenarios where 6X would often struggle to get cleaner shots.

Honor 6X is available to purchase in India online exclusively on It is available in Gold, Grey and Silver Colors and comes in 3GB ram, 4GB ram variants. Check out the current lowest prices here.
